Opened in 1874 as the most stylish and prestigeous club in the area - membership was set at 2 guineas a year (ie £2 and 2 shillings - what a shilling?- about 5p)- but thats the equivilent of about £500 in current terms after taking inflation into account! and upto 1986 the building remained a club that was only open to male members! For many many years the club has seemed to be ‘somewhere that you couldn’t go to unless you were a member’ - but how did you become a member? and why turn away people that would love to use the premises because they’re not a member? This is now is the past as The City brings itself into the 21st Century The club has remained a members only club until July 2006 when current owners Everards Brewery and business partners Steve Jason and Karen Hart successfully applied to have the ‘membership’ restrictions lifted and The venue is now open to all! To emphasize the point that the venue is now open to all then you'll see that we now refer to our venue as simply 'The City' |
The aim of the venue is to appeal to the 25+ age range in the immediate Peterborough area and beyond. The doors will be open to ‘nice’ people who still want to go and enjoy themselves eating reasonably priced food, music that’s recognisable but not too loud on the ear and a choice of drinks that appeal to people who understand that a Vodka & Lemonade can be made by the barman and does not have to come ‘ready mixed’ in a bottle!
If this seems to appeal to you and your work colleagues then we would love to see you soon.
The venue is open to 11pm Monday through to Thursday and later on Friday and Saturday nights- there’s no admission charge during the week and it’s free to all before 11pm for the front bar and lounge - however,we've a great line up of events taking place at The City in 2008 and a modest entry fee will be charged on these nights -
And just to re-emphasise – MEMBERSHIP IS NO LONGER REQUIRED to enter The City Club!
Over the next few months you’ll see various changes at The City – all designed to appeal to the age range that we want to attract so if you’ve not been for a while and you’re currently bemoaning the lack of venues in Peterborough for the 25+ crowd then why not take the opportunity to reacquaint yourself with the ‘Oldest’ club in town – we think you’ll enjoy being friends with us again!!
